This course will help students on their journey to become global citizens by exposing them to the growing importance of Panama because of its:

  1. Unique geography and central location.  Panama is an isthmus at the intersection of North and South America, and joining the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  This strategic location provides unique supply chain and logistical advantages as a hub for international business and trade.
  1. Large infrastructure investment and expansion of the Panama Canal. The major investment needed in the global economy in the future will be on infrastructure, but this area is fraught with difficulties because of its long cycle, politics, corruption, geography, climate, nature, and complexity. Students will develop an understanding of these difficulties and opportunities in the context of the Panama Canal and other infrastructure investments being made to improve Panama’s role as a logistical hub.
  1. Competitive economy (second in Latin America).  Analyze Panama’s strengths in  commerce, banking, tourism, and retirement immigration, and wrestle with the challenges of reducing its income inequality.
  1. Entrepreneurship potential.  Explore opportunities for doing business with Panama through exporting or importing specific products.  These feasibility projects may continue after the course and develop into enduring ventures.
