The Program

The program highlight is a 12-day travel experience to South Africa over Spring Break. Students will visit NGO’s, schools, and key cultural sites, and meet with teachers, students, and community leaders in South Africa to participate in community service and engage in dialogue and shared experience on topics of racism and poverty, urban revitalization, global and regional development, and environmental degradation while focusing on the role of girls and women.

Understanding of complex issues—gender, poverty, racism, justice, environmentally‐poor housing, climate‐change, activism, and desire for change—will be arrived at through reading, dialogue, hands‐on activity, and reflection.

Students will visit historical and cultural sites such as Table Mountain, Robben Island, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa’s Wine Country, the Apartheid Museum, and a visit to Kruger National Park (game reserve).

Students enrolled in the course are required to meet in-person for six classes, attend a mandatory trip meeting, and travel over Spring Break.
