As part of an ongoing initiative to provide Rutgers–Camden students with credit-bearing learning abroad programs of the highest quality, the Learning Abroad Academic Advisory Committee has approved the following program structure and guidelines.  They were adopted by the Chancellor and by the Deans of the School of Law, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, and the School of Nursing in Spring of 2013. 

Background

The Rutgers–Camden Learning Abroad Academic Advisory Committee is a new campus-wide initiative established by the chancellor as a result of recommendations from the Global Research and Education Committee to encourage, support, and oversee academic programs in a foreign setting, including those that incorporate a period of experiential or service learning.  The LAAAC, which includes a representative from each school appointed by its dean, is charged with promoting adherence to best practices in the field; establishing consistency across all schools on campus; providing support, guidance and training for faculty; and enabling ongoing program development and assessment for all Rutgers–Camden learning abroad programs.

The mission of the Learning Abroad Academic Advisory Committee is to provide students with high-quality learning opportunities that foster meaningful intellectual and intercultural experiences and expand their understanding of their roles as citizens and professionals in an interconnected world.

Academic and Administrative Framework

All Rutgers–Camden faculty-led learning abroad programs are credit-bearing courses governed by the following academic and administrative framework:

  1. Process for Program Approval. Prospective program leaders must complete a formal proposal in response to the LAAAC's Call for Proposals, get preliminary approval from the appropriate official in their department or school, and then secure final approval from the Learning Abroad Academic Advisory Committee in accordance with guidelines established by the LAAC and approved by the deans and chancellor.
  1. Program leaders must be standing or part-time faculty members on the Rutgers–Camden campus.   
  1. All program leaders must
  • Make travel arrangements in collaboration with the Rutgers-Camden Center for International Programs;
  • Post their program description, itinerary, course syllabus, application, and all related documents at globaleducation.rutgers.edu to insure that all participants have complied with health, safety, and other requirements and to facilitate recordkeeping and reporting;
  • Complete faculty training programs organized by the director;
  • Comply with all university policies and procedures, including those for risk management.    
  1. Participants enrolled for academic credit may include students from Rutgers–New Brunswick and Rutgers–Newark, as well as students from Rutgers–Camden off-campus locations.   
  1. Rutgers–Camden Learning Abroad programs are academic in nature, but when space is available family members, Rutgers staff, alumni, and others may participate in the foreign portion of the program, subject to approval by the faculty leader, the LAAAC, and the Rutgers–Camden administration.  All participants in this category are subject to the same rules and regulations as the student participants. 
  1. All participants must complete the application process on the official program page at globaleducation.rutgers.edu, and all other requirements for participation, including payment of any program fees.  Enrollment in the credit-bearing course related to the learning abroad experience must be completed through the campus registrar.
  1. Course requirements must be developed in accordance with the number of credits offered and with general academic standards in the departments and schools.  Course design should include a learning experience that includes the period before, during, and after the travel portion of the program.
  1. Programs involving distance or on-line learning must comply with university regulations and with applicable standards obtaining in the department or school sponsoring the program. 
  1. Compensation and any course load reduction for faculty members leading learning abroad programs are determined by their dean and school.
